A Critical Review of the Reporting of Ethanol Determinations
Abstract
Brr (County Laboratory, Martin St., Stafford) Methods of reporting the analytical findings in the determinatio[ of ethanol are critically examined, The complex problems due to the continued use of an albitraxy standard in the light of future developments in metrication are discussed. Evidence is produced to suggest that the expression of alcoholic strength in terms of “proof spirit” should be discowaged and confined only to statutory requirements for revenue purposes. Applications of the recent techniques using gas chromatogxaphy are considered and proposals are made for the use of absolute ethanol as a primary standard. Much work has been carried out dealing with the subject of alcoholometry but little new work has been published for many years.
