Currs Occupational Hygiene Section, Health and Safety Erecutive, Bootle, Merseyside The paper seeks to address the general question of what is meant by Occupational Exposure Limits and how they may be applied to the control of toxic substances in the workplace. Consideration is given to the way in which the limits are now being developed, as well as to the approach to assessment of compliance with them.
