Abstract

Alrlnrrrr WILLIAMS (City of London Laboratctries, Borough High Street, London, S.E.l) A review is made of the use of the Howard Mould Count method for the dctection offungal rot in tomato products. The legal standards for rarious countries are evaluated and rcsults of the examination of tomato products imported into London are tabulated. Notes are given on the technique, interpretation and signiflcance of the method. The value of the Rot Fragment Count as a confirmation of the Holard Count is discussed and an appraisal is made of the possible detection of mycotoxir-$ in tomato products. Factors which would influence the adoptlon ofa legal standard lor Great Britain are assessed.
