Abstract

TunNen (Phannacognosy Graup, Welsh School of Plurmacy, tltt/IST, Cardiff ) Solanine-containing fruits were found in a sample of prepaci.ed frozen peas. The fruits were identified and the presence of alkaloids was con- flrmed using thin layer chromatography. The toxicity of solanine-con- taining fruits is discussed. A sample ofprepacked frozen peas which came into the Authors’ possession contained foreign plant material. The sample came from a crop grown in Lincolnshire, harvested in July 1970, and processed immediately. Handpicking of the sample gave 3.6 g (0.8 per cent. of the total pack con- tents in the frozen wet state) of plant material other than peas.
