Introduction Consumer protection legislation on feedingstuffs, and on food, has been developed separately lrom the more general legislation controlling the sale of goods. Feed law dates back to the Act of 1893, followed by Acts in 1906 and 1926. The basic features of this legislation were to place on the seller a cleat responsibility for the fitness for purpose ofthe feed and for its safety for use, as speiified. The second basic feature was the tequirement for the purchaser to be given the basic information about the product. The unique feature of the legislation has always been the prescription of limits of variation for ths declarations of nutritional value to enable the producer to provide the informa- tion while taking account of inherent variations in the material, produ
