Abstract

7 The Colorimetric Deterrnination of Cyclamates in Soft Drinks and Sweetening Tablets by A. Coor (Public Analyst’s Department, Trafalgar P lace, Po ft smouth) Barium chloranilate is used for the colorimetric detcmination of thc sulphate produced by the action of nitrous acid on cyclamates. The method has been successfully applied to soft drinks and sweetening tablets. The method can be used for coloured solutions. The reaction between sulphate ions and the sparingly-soluble barium chloranilate complex at pH 4 in 50 per cent. ethanol liberates the highly coloured acid chloranilate ion which is measured spectrophotometrically at a wavelength of 530 mg-.
